What is a sleeper agent?

A sleeper agent is a covert operative who is placed in a target country or organization and remains inactive until activated by their controlling entity. They typically spend years establishing a normal life and blending into the local population before being given a mission.

Sleeper agents are trained to appear unassuming and to avoid drawing attention to themselves in order to maintain their cover. They often hold regular jobs and may have families and social connections in their target area.

When activated, sleeper agents may carry out a variety of tasks, such as gathering intelligence, carrying out acts of sabotage, or engaging in other covert operations. They are expected to remain loyal to their controlling entity and carry out their mission regardless of personal consequences.

Sleeper agents can be a highly effective tool for intelligence agencies and terrorist organizations, as they are able to operate undetected for long periods of time and can be activated at a moment's notice. Their existence poses a significant challenge for counterintelligence agencies, as identifying and neutralizing sleeper agents can be extremely difficult.
